I LOVE trees. When I was little, my four brothers and two sisters and I spent a lot of time swishing through leaves and collecting pinecones, acorns, buckeyes, and monkey balls.

Well, I don't know exactly, but they look like green, bumpy grapefruit-- just the right size for monkeys to toss around. They smash to smithereens in a very satisfying way if you happen to throw them at the ground.

(ok!OK! They are really osage oranges)

Unfortunately, although we always had plenty of squirrels in the neighborhood, there was a shortage of monkeys. Anyway, both of the books I've written have trees in them. Only one has a monkey. This is the one without the monkey. But I think you'll love it anyway...

My newest book is The Nutcracker Doll.
When my daughter Kepley was 8 years old, she auditioned for a part in Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker. More about this book, (and my daughter), here.

Bio
I grew up in Pittsburgh PA and I have four brothers and two sisters. We had a lot of fun collecting buckeyes and digging holes in the backyard.

I've had lots of different kinds of jobs. I've knitted designer sweaters, interpreted for the deaf, painted signs, and worked as an apprentice engrosser and medical illustrator. But writing and illustrating children's books is the best.

I'm still digging holes in the backyard; I dug a pond for goldfish and water lilies here in my backyard in Boston, MA.. I have a daughter named Kepley and a husband and a son both named Alphonse.
